Tämä web sivu sisältää lyhyen selostuksen kuvineen Pihlajaniemen kylästä, jota ympäröi Puruvesi.
There's more than one Pihlajaniemi in Finland. This Pihlajaniemi is a village situated on a large peninsular at the north end of the Puruvesi, a large lake in eastern Finland. The lake has for centuries been a rich source of fish. Early settlers were primarily fishermen and tar burners. Settlement was encouraged by the king of Sweden when he built the castle at Savonlinna in the 15th century. The village is a widely spread collection of farms and homes connected by a road that wanders along the peninsular from its base to its tip. Originally, the road connected these dwellings with a landing stage at the point. This was once the main means of access for the community. Now, since the building of a bridge over a narrow strait, the road connects with Route 71 and the district administrative centre at Kerimäki. |

Here are 2 sets of photographs. The first shows how it looks now. The second set shows it as it is was 25 years ago. In essence it hasn't changed. The old dirt road has grown over in parts and there is a new asphalt road. Some parts of the forest have been cut down, others have grown up.

1950's Fishing in winter
These two great shots show men from the village fishing through a large hole cut in the ice. My thanks to the late Tatu Turtiainen for supplying these. He's the sturdy young man on the right.

STEREOSCOPIC ANAGLYPHS
To view these you need red/blue glasses. They give a really good impression of what it's like in a pathless finnish forest. Watch out!....there could be bears about.
They're large pictures (1024x768).

WALLPAPERS
I use these next 8 photographs (from 2006/2008) as wallpapers. They're all sized 1024 x 768. They mostly show the Puruvesi in
various moods. The second picture, in the second row, shows the water level abnormally low in the autumn of 2006. It had been a very dry summer.

There are lots of beautiful places in Finland, but Pihlajaniemi is special for me, because that's where my wife comes from. That's her in the painting below. The landscape is made up, but I think you'll easily spot the components in the 1981 pictures.
